Welcome to the bidding for a historic instrument. This is the actual classical guitar as heard on Louis Armstrongs’ “What A Wonderful World” as played by L.A. Studio Legend and guitarist Al Hendrickson in 1967!
Al was one of the most recorded guitarists in history from 1940-the mid 70’s. He also scored a top 10 hit as a vocalist for “On A Slow Boat To China” whilst with Benny Goodman in 1947. He played and recorded with such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Artie Shaw, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie. Al was a first call session player for the biggest arrangers of the day; Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Quincy Jones. Film scores include Some Like It Hot, West Side Story, Blazing Saddles; TV themes to M.A.S.H, Bonanza, and Mission Impossible. Upon his retirement in 1980, Tommy Tedesco threw him a huge bon voyage party, for Al moved to Coos Bay, Or. for the remainder of his years.
This 1965 1A Ramirez was purchased on the recommendation of his fellow friend and guitarist Laurindo Almeida who personally inspected the Ramirez shop in 1964 and bought 2 that of a out of a lot of 5 that were meant to go to Segovia. He told Al to buy one sight unseen and he did. All letters and correspondence from Ramirez will be included with the guitar. This is now considered a classic 1A built by AM in early 1965/late 1964 and is in IMMACULATE condition. The Trapazoidal case is in Excellent condition. Al received this guitar on Feb 25th, 1965 and immediately used it for a George Shearing session.
There was an appraisal done in 2007 for 12,084.86 (inflation adjusted for 2015) from the esteemed builder Jeffrey Elliot here in Portland, Or. and the guitar has sat in the case since then. The appraisal did not consider it’s historical significance. All appraisal and notes will come with the guitar.
The guitar will also come with sheet music from previous recording sessions.
Al gave this guitar to one of his dearest friends 10 years ago, and I am selling it for him. The only
reason for its sale is for pending medical bills.
